Methodology

Methodology

Under the Ministry of Education Harmonized Academic Policy, Ethiopian university GPA is calculated on a 4.00 scale: Semester GPA (SGPA) = Total Grade Points earned divided by Total Credit Hours. Each letter grade is assigned standard grade points: A+/A = 4.0, A- = 3.75, B+ = 3.50, B = 3.00, B- = 2.75, C+ = 2.50, C = 2.00 (undergraduate degree pass mark), C- = 1.50, D = 1.00, Fx/F = 0.00. Senate graduation honors include: Very Great Distinction (CGPA ≥ 3.75), Great Distinction (3.50–3.74), Distinction (3.25–3.49), and Good Academic Standing (CGPA ≥ 2.00).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is Ethiopian university GPA calculated?

Multiply each course credit hour by the earned grade points (e.g., 3 credits × A [4.0] = 12 grade points). Add up all grade points and divide by the total semester credit hours.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA in Ethiopia?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures academic performance in a single term. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines all completed semesters by dividing cumulative grade points by total cumulative credits.

What is the passing GPA in Ethiopian universities?

Under Ethiopian academic legislation, undergraduate students must maintain a minimum SGPA and CGPA of 2.00 to remain in Good Academic Standing. A GPA below 1.75 results in an Academic Warning (ማስጠንቀቂያ).

What grade points correspond to Ethiopian university letter grades?

A+ (4.0), A (4.0), A- (3.75), B+ (3.50), B (3.00), B- (2.75), C+ (2.50), C (2.00), C- (1.50), D (1.00), Fx (0.00), and F (0.00).

What happens if an Ethiopian university student receives an F or Fx grade?

An Fx grade allows a student one re-examination opportunity under university senate guidelines. An F grade requires repeating the course and yields zero grade points.
